Why I Decided To Try Red Light Therapy For My Hair
My hair has always been on the thinner side - the strands are fine and straight - but it didn’t look terrible. Even though it wasn’t my dream mane, I never worried about losing it. Until one day, 4 (ish) years ago, I was looking in the mirror with the light source behind me, and saw an outline of my skull! It was shocking.
Hairloss snuck up on me, and by the time I noticed, it was severe. Google told me that most people lose about 50% of their hair before they notice any thinning, and that was true for me.
Seeing old pictures like this one makes me realize just how terrible my hair looked. But at the time, I didn’t pay attention. This was outside of the immediate postpartum or any major illnesses.
Before I noticed hair loss

About 3.5 years ago, I finally started using men’s 5% minoxidil (brand name Rogaine). After the initial shedding and itching phase, things stabilized and I saw increased hair density. The results eventually plateaued and no further improvement happened. But it was still much better than my baseline.
The worst my hair has ever looked

What else could I do? I tried hair loss shampoos, scalp serums, rosemary oil, and a few root products. None of them made a noticeable difference, except for the drain on my bank account. About 2 years ago, I started using CurrentBody Skin LED Hair Growth Helmet in addition to the 5% minoxidil.
My 2 Year Experience Using The Currentbody Skin Hair Growth Helmet
This red light therapy hair loss helmet is FDA cleared and uses 660nm light to increase hair growth rate in 12 weeks. It also reduces inflammation and excessive scalp oil. You can get it on the CurrentBody website with my affiliate discount code HOBBITHAIR.

How to use:
Put on once a day
Turn on
Wait for the 10 minute cycle to finish
If you have long hair, I recommend loosely braiding it or doing a low bun - this helps keep the strands from catching in various components of the device.
The helmet has built-in bluetooth headphones and can stream your choice of audio. My best advice for working this into your daily routine is to find a consistent time to use the CurrentBody helmet. For me, it’s every night while I fill the bathtub. It takes approximately 10 minutes to fill my tub, so when the sound in the helmet stops, I know it’s time to shut off the water. The device is wireless and stays on well, and you can do whatever you like during the session. I often use the CurrentBody hand treatment device at the same time as the helmet, because they both run for 10 minutes. You can also add the face mask for a full spa experience.

My Results - Before And After Using The Currentbody Hair Growth Helmet
By the time I introduced the helmet, my minoxidil results were consistent and no longer improving. So it was fairly easy to tell that any further progress was due to CurrentBody. I noticed the biggest difference in the very front of the scalp, where some people have a “widow’s peak”. Even with minoxidil, that spot was the most sparse - I often reached for a special scalp makeup product to hide the bare skin peeking through the hair. I would not call that spot perfect even now, but after a few months with the CurrentBody helmet, I no longer felt the need to constantly hide the area with hats or makeup.
I have been diligent with the helmet all these years, except for a brief break this Spring when we moved. I packed everything I could in advance, and the helmet made that list. My hair started to look worse than my current “usual” after a few weeks of missed sessions.
The helmet is very easy to use, has no adjustment / shed period, and is a one-time investment vs a monthly expense. For me, it’s not a question of replacing minoxidil - the two work very well together. But one is a constant expense with a rough adjustment period of shedding and scalp irritation, and the other one lets me listen to audiobooks while I relax for 10 minutes. CurrentBody is definitely a lot more enjoyable to use.
CurrentBody Hair Growth Helmet is clinically proven to deliver visible results in 12 weeks:
Hair growth ↑ 123%
Hair thickness ↑ 26%

How LED Technology Supports Hair Growth
LED light helps reduce inflammation, boosts circulation, and energizes / “wakes up” dormant hair follicles to give you the fullest hair possible. The follicles stay in the growth phase longer, while improved circulation delivers all the needed nutrients for growth. The helmet also lowers levels of DHT, a hormone responsible for hair loss and thinning. It truly tackles hair thinning from all sides, providing great results.
Is the CurrentBody Hair Growth Helmet Worth It?
My helmet came to me as a free device for testing 2+ years ago, but I can confidently say that if something happened to it, I would happily repurchase it with my own money. It’s worth it. Hair loss is common, but it doesn’t make it emotionally easier to see your scalp shining through the sparse strands. I am not a vain person, I can easily leave the house without makeup, but looking bald was hugely affecting my self esteem. Not everything in life can be improved or fixed, but my hair loss was the one thing I could tackle. If you are starting to notice thinning hair, a widening part, or a skull outline, please don’t wait. Hair loss can often be improved or reversed, but there is also such a thing as waiting too long.
