The older I get, the more peace I make with my skin, body, and life in general. The one remaining pain point is my hair. Not only is it fine, straight, and totally the wrong color, but it’s also getting worse! When you don’t have a lot of hair to begin with, and then it starts to thin due to various factors (hello aging, stress, and autoimmune issues), it makes for a horrible combination. I always recommend seeing a doctor, especially if your hair loss is severe and / or sudden, and I’m taking some measures to address mine. But sometimes a quick fix is nice, and that’s where hair shadows come in.
I’ve been eyeing these for some time, and a few years ago people were using regular eyeshadow to apply to the hairline and thin areas of the scalp to make hair appear fuller. I was a maid of honor in 2011, and even back then the stylist used some matte eyeshadow to make my hairline look fuller. These days, we can get products made specifically for the scalp, like Mamonde Pang Pang Hair Shadow on Jolse. Several colors are available; I chose #03 Reddish Brown. My hair is naturally ash blonde, but I color it monthly with henna.
How to use
Open the flip top lid to reveal the shadow and the mirror
Twist the bottom to remove the puff applicator
Apply the shadow to sparse areas of the hairline
To me, this is a makeup product and I do not expect any benefits from it aside from that, but the marketing materials do say that it contains rosehip fruit extract to nourish the hair and scalp. I do not notice a scent while using this.
My impressions
This is amazing and I should have gotten one sooner! This color works for me both right after coloring (when the henna is fresh and bright) and when the roots are grown out. In the pictures below, I am due for a root touch up but the shadow color still works. Pay attention to the hair on my temple and right at the top (above the forehead) in both pictures. The difference is very noticeable.
The whole process takes me less than a minute. I gently rub the puff over the shadow, then tap it into the scalp - mostly on the area above the forehead.
I’m currently using minoxidil to help with hair growth, and the unfortunate temporary side effect of that is increased hair shedding. Just what I need - to shed the little hair I still have… Anyway, it should get better in another month or two, but in the meantime I’m loving the Mamonde Pang Pang Hair Shadow! It makes me feel much more confident.
This product isn’t waterproof, as far as I can tell, and will rub off on the fingertips if you touch your hairline too much. I don’t touch my scalp during the day, so it’s not an issue for me. If you wear white or light colored hats that come in contact with your scalp, you might get some staining. Simply brushing, combing, or running fingers through hair doesn’t seem to disturb the shadow in any way. Overall, this is a huge win for me and something I’ll keep using as long as I feel I need it. I highly recommend you try it if you are in the market for something like this.
