Wash off treatments can be a fun addition to a skincare routine. I have a little organizer next to my bathtub to keep such things - masks, peeling gels, and so on. VVBETTER Gentle Purifying Mud Mask, available on Amazon and Stylevana (discount code INF10KBH), promises to improve the look of pores, skin texture, and normalize oil-water balance while providing a spa-like experience.
The star ingredients are kaolin and bentonite to deeply clean and purify the skin. Marketing materials mention “drawing out impurities”, but clay masks aren’t magical pore vacuums. They don’t draw anything out - the clay can absorb some oils and debris that it comes in contact with; it cannot suction anything out. Still, a good clay mask typically leads to an immediate noticeable improvement in the look and feel of skin, especially if the skin is oily.
How to use
Apply generously after cleansing
Leave on for 10-15 minutes (I like doing this while soaking in the tub)
Rinse
Follow with the rest of your routine
VVBETTER Gentle Purifying Mud Mask has a thick texture that’s somewhat creamy and no noticeable scent. It’s pretty easy to rinse off and leaves the skin more matte than before use.
My impressions
I wanted to love this, but I don’t. At first, I got really excited about the beautiful packaging coupled with a simple white product - so refreshing compared to masks with added colorants. But I’m not loving the user experience. The mask is not as creamy or as gentle as I would have liked, despite the name.
Something in the formula causes mild stinging during use. I’m no chemist, and running the ingredients through CosDNA didn’t reveal anything meaningful as far as the source of the sting. I’ve used many clay masks before and I don’t remember ever feeling this other than ages ago when I used to mix red dry clay with water and use that as a mask. I could speculate forever, but basically I don’t like how it feels. I’m also not noticing any big positive changes after use.
When I first applied VVBETTER Gentle Purifying Mud Mask and felt that sting / tightness, I blamed it on a damaged skin barrier. But when the same thing happened every time, I figured it was the mask and not my skin.
I’ve gone through the entire jar and I wouldn’t get this again. I loved the VVBETTER Cleansing oil (review here) and still have high hopes for their other products.
