Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish SPF50+ PA+++ Review

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “beginner’s luck”, when someone with absolutely no experience suddenly gets a great result. The first time I purchased this sunblock must have been one of those moments. It was over a year ago as I was starting to discover the wonders of Korean beauty and skincare. Since I am only slightly darker than a sheet of white paper, sun protection is a serious issue in my life. Naturally, one of the first things I was hoping to find was an alternative to greasy, smelly, white-cast-leaving sun products available in the US.

Without reading any reviews or even checking the ingredients (gasp), I ordered this Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish SPF50+ PA+++ (available on* eBay and Amazon). And it turned out to be a great product and a repeat buy for me. After trying a few other great sunblocks, I am back to this one and have recently opened my second bottle.

Sunprise Mild Airy Finish is a 100% mineral sunblock (versus a chemical one) making it a great solution for sensitive skin and people wanting to avoid chemical sunscreens.

Active ingredients:

  • Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide - mineral sunblocks gentle on sensitive skin

  • Centella asiatica, mistletoe, portulaca oleracea - soothe and heal the skin

  • Aloe vera, hyaluronic acid - hydrate the skin

How to use:

  • Apply at the last step of skincare, before makeup

  • The widely accepted recommended dose for any sunscreen is ¼ teaspoon each on the face and neck (a US nickel-size dollop each)

  • Don’t forget the ears and the back of the neck

  • Let soak in for 2-3 minutes, then apply makeup, if using

Most of us have probably already heard of SPF (sun protection factor), but what is PA? It’s based on a Persistent Pigmentation Darkening test which measures how much UVA a person can be exposed to without tanning/skin darkening. The range is from + to ++++. In short - higher SPF and more “+”s after the PA mean higher protection against the sun. This product has PA+++.

My impressions:

I LOVE this sunscreen. Yes, someone as pale as myself can actually “love” a sun product, trust me. It’s not greasy at all, doesn’t leave a white cast, and doesn’t interfere with makeup. I can’t speak on the white cast aspect for someone with a deeper skin tone, however.

I have not gotten even a little pink while using it and have had no adverse reactions. I use it only on the face/neck (not the body), so it lasts me several months. I like the fact that it’s 100% mineral based without the controversial chemical ingredients. Despite alcohol being pretty high on the list, I did not notice any dryness while using this sunblock. It’s quite possibly because I apply it at the end of the skincare routine (after my regular face cream), so it’s not sitting directly on bare skin. It’s sold on* eBay and Amazon.
