If I were somehow limited to only two skincare products, I would choose a cleanser and a sunscreen. Those two steps - proper removal or dirt and makeup and protection against the sun - are keys to healthy skin. Without that, all other efforts go in vain. My most recent foaming cleanser discovery is Manyo Factory Deep Pore Cleansing Soda Foam (say that five times fast!). It’s avaialble on* eBay and Amazon.
This cleansing foam contains no chemical or synthetic surfactants. Manyo Factory scientists tested conventional cleansers containing parabens and other harsh ingredients against dish soap and found that results were scarily similar. Based on that, they set out to make an effective yet gentle cleanser that wouldn’t cause any damage to the skin, because who wants anything resembling dish soap on their face?
The ingenious minds behind the Manyo Factory Korean skincare brand managed to put a cleansing powder of cornstarch, diatomite (a type of clay), chamomile flower, soda, green tea, mung bean and other beneficial ingredients into a foaming wash. The natural particles of this powder are smaller than pores and promise to clean effectively yet gently, without causing irritation or compromising the skin barrier. It's suitable for all skin types (mine is combination).
The bubbling and exfoliating components of the Manyo Factory Deep Pore Cleansing Soda Foam are also natural - papaya enzyme, Chinese yam, ginseng, potato and coconut. The manufacturer even added hydrating items such as hyaluronic acid, rice bran, olive oil, beeswax and aloe. I am including a full list of ingredients at the end of the review. The soda foam is dermatologically tested, doesn’t contain any animal ingredients (or testing) and is EWG certified as safe/non-toxic.
How to use:
Mix a pea-sized amount of product with water to create foam
Gently spread over the face, avoiding the eyes
Rinse with water
Can be used morning and evening
The cleanser foams much better than what I was able to photograph (it's hard to catch all the bubbles when you only have two hands and have to juggle a camera in one while not getting foam all over).
My impressions:
I’ve only ever tried one “soda” cleanser, a sample from Etude House, and it was way too harsh for me. In general, deep pore type cleansers can be stripping. But, as usual, Manyo Factory doesn’t disappoint. The only thing I find slightly annoying is that it takes some pressure to get the cleanser out of the tube. I don’t know if it’s because of the clay in the ingredients making the product thicker, or maybe it’s from being shipped here from South Korea and experiencing all the pressure changes in the air. Either way, that’s a very small issue and not at all a deal breaker. The soda foam comes out like thick, green toothpaste and foams easily in the palms once a bit of water is added. It does only take a small amount of product to cleanse the whole face, so the tube should last me months.
The main thing - I think I have found my Holy Grail of foaming cleansers. I can’t say enough good things about this foam. It’s very effective - my skin feels so clean, and the pores look clear and even smaller. The manufacturer says it can remove makeup, but I still prefer a cleansing oil for that, so I use the soda foam as a second step cleanser in the evening or by itself in the morning.
