MITOMO Vitamin + Lithospermum Essence Mask Review

I’ve seen the MITOMO Vitamin + Lithospermum Essence Mask get rave reviews online. Imagine how thrilled I was to find one lonely box of ten masks in a local discount store. Yay! Finally, something amazing came my way (usually, the physical stores where I live do not have anything exciting). It’s also available on eBay and Amazon.

The mask is Japanese and recommended for sensitive skin. It contains vitamin E to protect the skin from free radical damage. Lithospermum helps reduce acne, clogged pores, and blemishes. The sheet is made from natural cotton.

How to use:

  1. Apply the mask to a clean face (the instructions say nothing about using toner first)

  2. Leave on for 20-30 minutes

  3. Remove and pat in the remaining essence

My impressions:

Oooof. The screaming question in my head when I think about this mask is “WHY?!”. WHY would the manufacturer make the shape SO AWFUL? Seriously. I think I have a fairly “typical” face, not too wide and not too narrow, with what I would hope are normal, average-sized eyes. This mask is cut for a cartoon character with plates for eyes. The openings are so huge, it feels like the whole sheet is going to tear apart when unfolded. The mouth part is giant also, and there is a very strange slit on the chin that serves no purpose other than to annoy me further. The mask is very hard to position on the face because of these huge openings which make the material twist around as you try to unfold it. All masks in the package are like that, I have now used up almost the whole box…

It looks like a decent fit in the picture, but trust me - it took way more time to get the mask on than it should have.

The sad part - the serum/essence in the mask is actually great. I love it. There’s a light, pleasant scent. The mask hydrates very well and does seem to calm down redness if I have any. The material, despite having a very unfortunate shape, is soft and pleasant to the touch. This is my first Japanese sheet mask, so perhaps they are all shaped this way (I hope not), but so far I definitely prefer the Korean masks (read about the ones I’ve tried here).
