Purito Jeju Volcanic Scoria Konjac Sponge Review

Updated: Oct 24, 2020

Konjac sponges are wonderful skincare tools to have in your arsenal. I’ve written about them before in this article. Today I want to talk specifically about Purito Jeju Volcanic Scoria Konjac Sponge.

Konjac sponges are made from Konnyaku potatoes that grow in Asia. They are naturally alkaline and can help balance the skin. This specific sponge also contains volcanic scoria to further control sebum. A dry konjac sponge is quite hard. It expands greatly with water, becoming much softer.

Purito is one of my favorite brands of natural and nontoxic skincare (lots of reviews here). They recently came out with two types of konjac sponges - Volcanic Scoria and Bamboo Charcoal. Both are available on eBay, Amazon, and YesStyle.

I have the Volcanic Scoria one.

Benefits:

  • Gentle exfoliation

  • Improved circulation

  • Chemical free

  • 100% biodegradable

  • Sustainable plant product

  • Cruelty free and vegan

The sponge is handmade and doesn’t contain any synthetic colorants (a big reason why I avoid the cheap ones made in China).

How to use:

  1. Wet until plump - the first time this might require soaking

  2. Squeeze out excess water (do not twist)

  3. Gently massage the face (either clean face or while using a foaming cleanser)

  4. Rinse and hang to dry

Soak the sponge in hot water for 3-5 minutes to kill any bacteria. This can be done weekly or as often as you’d like (especially if you have acne prone skin).

My impressions:

This is a lovely sponge. It’s so big that it looks like it could eat my other sponges. This large size makes it great even for body use, if you so desire. The pointed shape allows for precise maneuvering around the face.

Hand for scale :)

I’m not a fan of harsh physical exfoliation (yes, there was St. Ives apricot scrub in my confused teenage years, but both me and my skin survived those dark ages). The Purito Jeju Volcanic Scoria konjac sponge carefully removes dead skin cells and other debris while promoting circulation. It can be used daily without any ill effects on the skin. I often start my morning with just the sponge and water to get any remaining evening skincare off my face. With consistent use, I see improved/softer texture and a glow that comes from good circulation. Whether you are a seasoned konjac user or are just curious about the possibilities, I recommend you try the Purito one.

Purito sent me this sponge for free, which in no way influenced the review.
