Simplistic Skin Care BEGIN Cleanser Review

Simplistic Skin Care is a fairly new (3 years old) Korean skincare brand. Their goal is to improve skin naturally and gradually from within instead of promising quick miraculous results to the users. The brand strives to make quality, simple products with natural, organic and safe ingredients suitable for all people, including those with sensitive skin and during pregnancy (but please consult your doctor).

The BEGIN Cleanser is a mild yet effective foaming wash. All of the ingredients are rated 0-2 (safe) on Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) database. The surfactants in the cleanser are derived from nature and EcoCert certified. The name BEGIN refers to the fact that we begin (and end) our days with cleansing. It’s available on eBay and Amazon.

Active ingredients:

  • 100% Distilled EcoCert certified Chamaecyparis Obtusa Water - chamaecyparis obtusa (commonly known as hinoki cypress) is an evergreen needle tree native to Japan. It’s full of strong phytoncides that inhibit bacterial growth and help purify the skin. This replaces regular water that’s often used by other brands.

  • 100% natural honey - the cleanser contains real honey (not honey extract) and propolis which are known for their antibacterial, healing, and soothing properties.

  • Organic aloe vera - Oregon Tilth Certified Organic aloe powder soothes irritated skin.

  • Natural surfactants - Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate (EcoCert), Lauryl Glucoside (EcoCert, non-ionic surfactant from coconut oil, potato starch and corn), Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate (botanical surfactant from coconut extract).

The cleanser is a beautiful honey color and a gel-like consistency. It’s economical - one pump of product forms a gentle foam that is more than sufficient for the face and neck. It can be used morning and night.

How to use:

  • In the morning, foam in palms with a bit of water, massage over face and rinse.

  • In the evening, if using an oil cleanser, use that first then follow with the BEGIN cleanser.

My impressions:

I am very, very, very pleased with this product. There’s something infinitely attractive about a short and honest ingredient list and a company that’s willing to fully disclose the source and the purpose of all ingredients. Although obviously not related to effectiveness, the packaging is lovely too. Simple, clean design that is completely unisex. I love aesthetically pleasing tubes and bottles in the bathroom. The picture instructions on the back made me giggle, and a friend said “they must have made those for men” when she saw them. But, as someone who doesn’t speak or read Korean, I definitely will take pictures any day.

The scent is mild and “woodsy”, perhaps from the cypress water, and is somewhat reminiscent of tea tree. Again, completely unisex if you are looking for something to share with a partner (I’m stingy and don’t offer mine to the husband).

I have combination skin that doesn’t typically break out, but there are occasional episodes. I did notice that the BEGIN cleanser helps them resolve faster. In general, my skin feels very soft, clean, but not “squeaky” or over-stripped. I mostly use this in the morning, but have also tested as a second cleanser in the evening and it works just as well. This is definitely a brand I will be keeping my eye on from now on. It’s worth a try.
