Oily scalp is the bane of my existence! I know that hair training is a myth, but wouldn’t it be nice to force the scalp into submission and train it to produce less oil? Alas, wishful thinking is rarely helpful. There are, however, some tangible ways to help even the greasiest of scalps stay clean longer (and it doesn’t involve pounds of dry shampoo!).

Dr.FORHAIR Phyto Fresh Scalp Scaler, sold on YesStyle (reward code KBHOBBIT) and Olive Young (code KBHOBBIT77), exfoliates, soothes, and balances the scalp. Salicylic acid may help control sebum production for longer term results. The scalp scaler also promises to remove buildup and flakes.

How to use

  • Apply directly to the scalp

  • Massage

  • Rinse

I typically wet the scalp, apply the scaler (some scalers say to specifically use on dry scalp, but this one seems to work fine on wet scalp as well), massage, rinse, then shampoo and condition as usual. Menthol provides a very mild, pleasant tingle that doesn’t linger and isn’t irritating. Dr.FORHAIR Phyto Fresh Scalp Scaler smells like mint in the best way and has the consistency of thin conditioner. The nozzle applicator is absolutely perfect for this

Please note that using any salicylic acid scalp products, including scalers and shampoos, can make the skin more sun sensitive. Always practice good sun protection habits - hats or sunscreen - especially during sunny seasons or if you have thin, fine hair. I haven’t had any issues with Dr.FORHAIR, but I gave myself a lovely sunburn on my part after taking a hatless walk post TSal shampoo. It wasn’t hot yet, but it was sunny and I thought it would be ok. Don’t be like me.

My impressions

Dr.FORHAIR Phyto Fresh Scalp Scaler is a lovely addition to my haircare routine. I use it 1-2 times a week to remove unwanted oil and possible dry shampoo build up. Yes, despite the opening paragraph, I do use dry shampoo, but sparingly. And never two days in a row.

I enjoy the extra clean feeling after the scaler, without excessive dryness or irritation. I haven’t noticed any long term oil reduction, but I’m OK with that.

I don’t have dandruff, but my preteen occasionally struggles with it. She also has very thick hair (jealous!) and a scalp that is trying to figure out how much oil is too much oil. Puberty is so fun… When I use this scalp scaler on her, it does a lovely job deeply cleansing the skin and roots and gives her an extra day of clean looking hair between washes.

This is one of my favorite scalp scalers. Lador makes good ones as well, but they come in small tubes and are somewhat harder to use due to their thicker texture. I’ve also had others with very thick texture and large inclusions of salt crystals (I think that’s what they were), and those are even more difficult to use. Dr.FORHAIR nailed the package+texture combo for the ultimate easy user experience. It’s so simple to apply! If you are in the market for a scalp scaler (think of it as an occasional scalp exfoliation), then this is a good one to try.
