Kose Decorte Eye Glow Gem Skin Shadow Review

Eye makeup has always been tricky on my oily, hooded lids. It took me a long time to figure out how to apply eyeshadow to where my hoods don’t swallow all of the color. Now, I can do some pretty cool looks, but it’s a bit more effort than I want to put in on a daily basis.

Enter Kose Decorte Eye Glow Gem Skin Shadows! These are wonderful (more on that later), creamy formulas. They used to be nearly impossible to find, so I had to stalk the listing on YesStyle (reward code KBHOBBIT) and only get 1-2 colors at a time. Now, you can get them at Ulta! What a time to be alive.

These are creamy, smudge-free and crease-proof formulas that come in silky matte and shimmery finishes. 

How to use

• Apply with fingertips

I suppose you could use a makeup brush, if desired, but fingertips work wonderfully for this formula, especially for the shimmery shades.

My impressions

I love these eyeshadows so much! I hunted them down and snatched up colors as they became available. Yes, they are pricey, but it’s so worth it for me! Hooded, oily lids aren’t the best canvas for elaborate eye looks. Hours of effort can roll into the crease within minutes if the products aren’t designed for my type of eyelid. For many years, I wore nothing other than powder and mascara; imagine my excitement when I discovered Kose Decorte and they lasted all day on me! That’s right - no smudging, creasing, rolling - it’s perfect. No primer needed. The only other product that comes close to this performance is Armani Eye Tint (at an even higher price - yay me).

If choosing only one or two colors, I would focus on the ones with a shimmer. They are wonderful and so beautiful! Matte ones are great too, but not as visually impressive and give less of a “one-step-makeup-look”. If I use only a matte color, I still feel like something is missing. But one pass with Milk Azuki and I look like I spent a lot more time on the makeup than I actually did.

This next part is going to be controversial… I used my Kose Decorte jars way past their recommended period after opening. Is this advice? No. You shouldn’t do that. Be responsible, toss expired products. But… they smelled, looked, and worked exactly the same way they did when I bought them, so I kept using them. You should certainly be better than I am.

I eventually had to discard the leftovers after having an allergic reaction to another eye product “past its prime” (Unleashia Glitterpedia palette). That scared me off of expired eye makeup, at least the creamy formulas. Powders usually last for years and years if stored properly. The moral of the story here is don’t buy more than what you can reasonably use up and focus on a couple colors to start, until you know just how quickly those jars will get empty.

Overall, I am very happy I tried these formulas. They reassured me that hooded, oily eyelids are not a hopeless case and that I can, in fact, find products that work.
