I spent a good chunk of the last three years trying to look like a mermaid - shimmery, shiny, blue-violet and ethereal. I’m not sure what exactly attracted me to this color palate, but I didn’t resist much. Chinese brands offer a lot of products that fall into that category, and Gella’s glitter eyeshadow singles caught my eye.

Pink jar of shimmery cream with "Gella’s" text on lid, open on a pastel purple surface, creating a soft, calming mood.

The shadows come in 4 colors; I chose 01 - it has the least visible glitter but shows a beautiful shimmer in photos. At the time, it was available on YesStyle (reward code KBHOBBIT). Today, it’s out of stock.

The brand advertises the shadows as usable on the lips, eyes, and cheekbones. My intention was to use it on the eyes.

Left: Gella's on the lids, cheecks, and lips (no base color).

Right: Gella's on the lips over a deep red lipstick

My impressions

This is an interesting product that is not usable for me as eye makeup. I have hooded, oily lids and Gella’s formula never sets / dries down. It stays creamy and slippery, feeling borderline greasy on the eyes and cheeks.

While this makes it terrible as eye and cheek makeup, it’s fantastic as a lippie! By itself, it makes the lips look soft, shiny, and ethereal. What a great way to wear Gella’s. Even better? As a topper on an otherwise too-dark lip color. I have a lot of red lipsticks and lip stains, and sometimes that looks too harsh on my pale skin. A little dab of Gella’s Glitter Single Shadow and the entire look softens and gains an extra level of visual complexity. I’m not sure if the other, more glittery colors would work the same way, but 01 definitely does. Because the eyeshadow never dries down, it keeps the lips soft and smooth the entire wear.

Small container of shimmering peach cream on a purple background, with minimal text visible on the container's edge.

I have enjoyed experimenting with Gella’s and getting some unexpected, fun lip looks. But I don’t love it enough to repurchase it. Because of the packaging, it’s not a great choice for on-the-go touch ups (I don’t want to dip hands or applicators into a jar while outside of the house). It’s not exactly long lasting and would need to be reapplied to maintain the desired lip look. I rarely reach for it and it might even be past its recommended period after opening by now. It was still fun and interesting to try and I’m definitely not mad I chose Gella’s.
