Oattbe Syn Bio β-Glucans Serum Review

Updated: May 26, 2020

Oattbe is a new to me brand of Korean skincare, and so far I love it. Oattbe’s philosophy is to combine the best of science and nature. The name itself comes from a fusion of “oat” and “syn bio beta glucans”. In addition to the sheet masks I already reviewed, I also got a chance to try the Oattbe Syn Bio β-Glucans Serum (available on Amazon).

Oattbe Syn Bio β-Glucans Serum promises the following:

  • Instantly moisturize the skin by penetrating deeply into the layers (Oattbe uses smaller beta glucan particles than other brands for best absorption)

  • Soothe the skin and support its natural barrier function - beta glucan is a well known calming agent that’s popular in products for sensitive skin

  • Anti-aging benefits - the serum includes 0.04% adenosine, which is a KFDA approved anti-aging component

How to use:

  • Apply after toner

  • Can be used in the morning and / or evening (or both)

Sometimes I used the serum right after toner, and other times I layered it over light essences. It works well either way.

My impressions:

I’m not sure if it’s the isolation, the stress of the whole thing, or some sort of hormonal changes, but my skin has been pretty wonky lately. So this soothing #serum came in very handy. I started using it exclusively (even though I own several other serums) as soon as it arrived. I’m a minimalist when it comes to my morning routine, but in the evenings I have more time and more energy. Serum every night is a must for me (see an example of my extended routine in this video).

I love the texture - the liquid is the right viscosity (not sticky but not watery) and glides on effortlessly. It makes my skin very soft, and I do notice the soothing effect. As I mentioned above, I've had plenty of opportunities for testing anti-inflammatory skincare thanks to recent breakouts. Since I pay close attention, I know how long it typically takes for a painful acne spot to get better; the Oattbe serum seems to speed up that process.

The scent deserves a special note. I do not see any strictly fragrance ingredients (find a full list below), but the product definitely has a very pleasant aroma. It reminds me of warm sugar with vanilla notes. It’s very faint, but oh so pleasant. Combined with the wonderfully designed brown glass bottle, the scent adds to the overall skincare experience.

I'm very pleased with this product. A few drops is all it takes for the entire face and neck, so it should last me several months of regular use. It's definitely among my top favorite serums.
