I love skincare, but I also really enjoying trying abeauty makeup and hair products. A lot of people suggested trying Shiseido hair masks and I obliged. I chose Shiseido Tsubaki Premium EX Repair Hair Mask, available on Amazon, YesStyle (reward code KBHOBBIT), and Stylevana (code INF10KBH).

Shiseido Tsubaki Premium EX Repair Hair Mask promises to repair and deeply moisturize damaged hair. The brand advertises the scent as “pleasant camelia”, but to me it smells like fruity gummy candy. It’s a great scent but fairly strong. Thankfully, it doesn’t linger too long after rinsing.

How to use

  • Shampoo and squeeze out excess water

  • Apply the mask

  • Rinse

  • Use once or twice a week

Shiseido states that even rinsing the mask immediately after application provides great benefits - no need to wait. I still choose to give it at least a minute or two. The texture is rich and creamy - easy to spread without dripping.

My impressions

I have fine, thin, stick straight hair with an oily scalp and dry/normal lengths. I’m heavy handed with pretty much all cosmetics, including hair masks. The first time I used Shiseido Tsubaki hair mask, I slathered it on my hair from ear level to ends and left it on for probably 5 minutes. Rinsed and blow dried as usual. Unfortunately, that made my ends look pretty stringy / oily the next day (see picture below).

Since then, I have experimented with the amount and duration and figured it out. My hair needs very little of this mask - hardly a dime sized amount - for a short amount of time. At this rate, I’m not sure how long it will take to get through the tub, definitely several months.

The mask is good, but I don’t think I’m the target audience. Someone with very damaged or chemically processed hair would likely find their holy grail in this Shiseido product. I am enjoying the scent and the texture, but almost always hesitate to reach for this in fear of overdoing it and ending up with greasy strands again. I will finish this tub but won’t repurchase the mask. Adding it to my mental list of items to suggest to people with dry hair.
