I love cleansing oils! While there are some great one-step cleansers, micellar waters, and other ways to effectively remove sunscreen and makeup, I enjoy a double cleanse. It feels like washing off a stressful day.

Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil, available on Amazon, YesStyle (reward code KBHOBBIT), and Stylevana (code INF10KBH) has a cult following. I have been heavily into Korean and Japanese beauty for almost a decade, but haven’t tried this cleanser until recently.

Kose advertises Softymo as a gentle formula suitable for all skin types. I have the most popular Speedy variety (pink). Kose also sells refills, which is a great idea for waste conscious consumers. Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil features organic botanical oils to moisturize and cleanse “in no time”.

How to use

  • Massage over face

  • Rinse

Kose states that the oil is OK to use on wet skin with wet hands (unless both are VERY wet), but starting with dry skin is ingrained in my brain. I always follow with a foaming cleanser.

My impressions

This is a great cleansing oil for people not sensitive to fragrance or botanical ingredients. It removes makeup, including some of the more stubborn waterproof formulas, and rinses cleanly while smelling quite nice. The texture is pleasant - thick and bouncy, not watery.

I typically don’t have issues with scented products (unless I simply dislike the scent), but lately I’ve been battling eye eczema from an unknown cause. I had to go to very boring, unscented, joyless products while things healed.

After months of feeling fine and using plain old Vanicream face wash, I tried Softymo again and had itchy eyelids. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe this was the culprit all along. I will never know. Sometimes the prized organic, botanical ingredients can cause more reactions than the hated parabens. Either way, I personally will not be finishing my bottle as a face cleanser, but I also will not throw it out.

Pro tip - use any cleansing oils, balms, and foaming washes that don't suit your skin to clean makeup brushes. Nothing gets a beauty blender or a brush cleaner than double cleansing it! Start with oil and a dry brush, then rinse, then foaming cleanser and rinse again - same as with your skin. The results are amazing. My makeup sponges look good as new. When I tried to skip the oil and go straight to the foaming wash, the sponge didn’t release anywhere near as much foundation and did not look at clean.

Have you tried Softymo? How was it?
